Located within the Washington State University / Eastern Washington University Hearing and Speech Clinic, HOPE School is the only listening and spoken language preschool for children with hearing loss in Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho. The non-profit program offers a comprehensive, state-of-the-art preschool for families who want their deaf and hard of hearing children to learn to listen and talk.
Spokane HOPE School is the vision of professionals and families of children with hearing loss. At the heart of this vision is the belief that deaf and hard of hearing preschoolers, who wear cochlear implants and modern hearing aids, should be given the opportunity to maximize their listening and spoken language skills in order that they may transition into their neighborhood schools, interact with normal hearing peers, and require little or no special services. Children will benefit from a language-enriched environment that will maximize their communication and academic potential. Families will benefit from a supportive atmosphere with a rich wealth of resources. Children with normal hearing can also benefit from this "language-enriched" program.

Facilities The Preschool is housed in a spacious 1,000 square foot classroom, complete with kitchen and enclosed playground. The acoustically sound classroom ensures a favorable signal to noise ratio. Sound proof audiology booths provide an appropriate atmosphere for assessing functionality of listening devices. In addition, treatment rooms are available for individual speech and language therapy sessions. Observation rooms for both the classroom and therapy rooms facilitate parent involvement and carryover of language and listening skills at home.
Our mission is to optimize the acquisition of listening, learning, and speaking skills in children who have hearing loss and provide a supportive environment for their families.
HOPE School follows a developmentally appropriate, language-enriched curriculum that is child-centered and theme-based. We provide activities for families to promote parent involvement and carryover of language skills at home.
Preschool students receive instruction from a certified Teacher of the Deaf, who has received specific training in working with children with cochlear implants as well as being highly experienced in the management of hearing aids and FM systems. A Speech-Language Pathologist assists in the AM classroom and a certified classroom teacher assists in the PM classroom to enhance speech, language, and listening skills in accordance with individual goals and objectives. Students may also receive individual speech-language therapy services from graduate students, supervised by state licensed and nationally certified speech-language pathologists. Maximum classroom size of 8 children guarantees a low ratio (often 1:1) between adults and students in the classroom and ensures an intimate, child-centered school experience. Toddlers participate, along with a parent/caregiver, in structured play activities under the guidance of a certified Teacher of the Deaf assisted by graduate students. Normal hearing peers who model age-appropriate speech and language for students with hearing loss may also be enrolled in both the Preschool and the

AudiologicalAudiological services provided on-site include cochlear implant and hearing aid checks along with minor repairs.
Graduate students from the EWU Department of Communication Disorders and WSU Department of Speech and Hearing provide daily individual speech-language therapy and audiology services to our preschool students under the supervision of a state licensed and nationally certified speech-language pathologist.
Complete cochlear implant services (medical and mapping) are available through Spokane Ear Nose and Throat Clinic which is located just a few minutes from the school.
Comprehensive individual assessments are completed on an annual basis in conjunction with ongoing classroom evaluations.
If you or someone you know has a child with hearing loss and the goal for this child is to maximize their listening and spoken language success with the aid of advanced hearing technology (hearing aids, cochlear implants), please contact HOPE School for more information. We will be happy to set up a tour of our school along with sharing the steps necessary for the child to reach their full language and learning potential.

As a private non-profit program, HOPE School relies on tuition and fundraising for the costs of instruction. Parents are encouraged to initiate contact with their school district prior to enrollment in an effort to obtain payment of tuition. Children with approved school district contracts will be eligible to receive services at no cost to the parents. Parents of children who have not initiated contact with their school district, those in negotiations with their school districts, and those who have been denied school district funding will be responsible for monthly tuition. Sliding scale tuition may be available upon receipt of an application for assistance and the completion of a financial packet. In the event that a school district contract is secured and retroactive tuition is received, parents will be reimbursed for past payments.

In an effort to raise awareness in the community about HOPE School, as well as hearing loss and listening and spoken language education in general, our Community Outreach Coordinator gives presentations at local service organization meetings, health fairs, and community events. If you would like to schedule a presentation, arrange for a tour of HOPE School, or participate in our annual fundraising campaign, please contact Kim Schafer at kim@spokanehopeschool.org or 509-863-7097.
HOPE School relies on community support to provide services to children with hearing loss. All donations made to our organization are matched dollar for dollar by a private family foundation whose mission is to support oral deaf education throughout North America.
